The Amherst Knights 00 AA team traveled to Washington, DC to take on the Xtreme 2000s in what would be a home and home series. The Xtreme are scheduled to travel to Buffalo in two weekends, yes, the weekend before Christmas to face them in their barn.
The Xtreme took the first game of the two rather easily and only allowed one blip on the radar en route to a 7-1 victory. The coach actually started moving kids around after two periods when the score was 6-1.
In the Sunday rematch, the Knights came on a bit stronger and more physically and pulled out to a stunning 2-0 lead. It wasn't that the Xtreme weren't getting the lion share of the scoring chances, we just were putting them home. They managed to squeak a couple past Watier with some screens and just persistence. With 0:53 left on the clock, the Xtreme got an offensive zone faceoff and pulled Watier for an extra attacker. We couldn't maintain control and gave up an empty net breakaway. The Knights scored and took a 3-1 lead. The Xtreme managed a bittersweet goal by Mac Wiseman with 7.3 seconds left on a great individual effort, but it just wasn't enough. We outshot them 28-13 in the 3-2 loss. Just one of those games.
We'll see what occurs in the rematch on Dec 18-19.

Aidan's 2002 Xtreme Win Can Am Challenge Cup in Lake Placid
Aidan and his 2002 Ashburn Xtreme squad took home the Can Am Challenge Cup this weekend.
They competed against 4 teams from the New England area. The Stamford Sharks gave them the best run for their money. In the preliminary game on the 80s Rink on Friday, Stamford posted a 2-0 lead in the game before succumbing to the Xtreme 4-2. These teams would square off again in the championship final on Sunday morning.
The final was intense right out of the gate as the Sharks attempted to make another early statement to the Xtreme. The Sharks managed to manufacture an early breakaway but it was turned aside by goalie Aidan Rudolf. The trailing defenseman that collected it and cleared it was able to get it to Matthew Price. In what would eventually be the game-winning goal, Matthew went end to end off the clearing pass and scored to give the Xtreme a 1-0 lead. David Hanny, Aidan's best buddy and line mate, would eventually add some late insurance to give the Xtreme the ending 2-0 score.

Mac Wiseman Advances to Sarnia, ON with Silver Sticks Regional Win
Mac Wiseman's 2000 birth year Xtreme team won the West Chester, Philadelphia Regional Silver Sticks championship on Thanksgiving weekend. They advanced out of a field of 16 teams in the Squirt AA division to win the right to compete in Sarnia, Ontario Jan 19-22, 2011 in the International Silver Sticks finals
We'll be loading up the van for Canada with a few team mates and parents for a great time in January. Local rival, Montgomery Blue Devils, advanced out of the southeast regional finals and will attend the same tournament. We could meet them in the preliminary rounds or potentially in the playoff brackets, which all teams will be seeded in for the finals.

Prince William @ Ashburn
The 00Xtreme ran their Squirt Wales Division record to 6-3-0 through 9 games on the strength of a 5-2 win over the Panthers. The game was 2-0 Ashburn heading into the 3rd period. Two quick defensive breakdowns allowed the Panthers to quickly tie the game at 2-2 before the Xtreme put some consecutive shots in to take control for good and close it out. Prince William began taking several penalties late in the period out of frustration.
Goal scorers were Joe Drake, Mac Wiseman (2), Ben Hanny, and Cameron Pirko.

Getting Going
Mac and Aidan begin an organized relationship with the Ashburn Ice House in the fall/winter of 2007.
Mac was placed in the hockey instructional predecessor classes - Power Ice, Learn to Play, etc. He was moved up from Power Ice 1 into Power Ice 2 the first week. Not a week or two later, he was moved up from Power Ice 2 into Power Ice 3. When he completed the Power Ice 3 and 4 sessions he was enrolled in a Hockey "Learn to Play" session conducted on Saturday afternoons. Coach Bucky and several other of the Ashburn Ice Hockey program coaches regularly participate in this program. Kids of all ages and development are enrolled. Many skating skills are demonstrated and emphasized to the kids in this program.
Mac always anticipated the final 15-20 minutes of the sessions because the coaches would split the ice and divide up the kids in appropriate age groups to conduct informal scrimmages. For a kid without much ice time under his belt, Mac quickly began to stand out and excel in these scrimmages. Even though checking is not allowed until age 11, Mac had been watching Alex Ovechkin quite a bit through the 2007-2008 NHL season and he was a buzzsaw - taking kids out on the boards with gusto - that is until the coaches let him know he wasn't allowed to do that just yet. I took some pleasure at hearing the comments of parents observing the scrimmage. Some were perplexed as I'm certain their child was one of the ones receiving the hits. Others were commenting on the aggressiveness and willingness to mix it up. Few kids at age 7 are quite aggressive, and most are never aggressive with slightly older kids. Mac took to the physical side of hockey very quickly. After witnessing this passion for the game, the Ashburn Ice House Hockey Director, Troy MacCormick, approached me about Mac possibly trying out for the Spring Power Play Selects (more on that in the next post).
Another program aimed at the younger Mites is called Mini-Mites. Aidan was enrolled in multiple sessions of Mini-Mites throughout the same time period. This was his session - no big brother! He could take pride in getting dressed to head out there. His Dad helped him get his equipment on for his first session and his PapPap came to help him out for the second session. Mom always made sure Aidan was there and on the ice generally.
Mini-Mites is generally coached by Wendy Marco and Rob Lorenzen. Wendy is a professional power skating and speed development coach who has several pro teams and pro players on her resume. She consults and provides instruction through her company, Cold Rush Hockey. Rob Lorenzen is a coach of the 1999 birth year Ashburn Xtreme hockey team as well as serving in his most notable role as the General Manager of the Ashburn Ice House.
Mini-Mites is setup to be fun with several games being played initially in the sessions to get the kids warmed up and always make sure they are looking forward to getting out there. Wendy and Rob weave the skills they want to teach into the fun programs they conduct. The kids are always eager to get into the Mini-Mites programs. Aidan participated in 3 or 4 back to back sessions of Mini-Mites to get his legs under him.

Welcome to Wise Guy Hockey!!
2007-2008 launched Mac and Aidan into organized hockey.
Both kids had skated on occasions prior to the late summer and fall of 2007. Mac skated the first time as a 3 or 4 year old on the outdoor ice in the Manassas, VA outdoor rink by the train station and the Farmer's Market in Old Towne Manassas. I cannot say for sure when Aidan put on skates for the very first time. It could have been a public skating session at the Ashburn Ice House prior to 2007.
Their Pop-Pop (their grandfather) and their dad introduced them to the game of ice hockey by exposing them early on to the NHL on television and taking them to several NHL hockey games at the Verizon Center. Pop-Pop is connected to the NHL and the Washington Capitals and serves both organizations in several capacities. Their dad was an NHL off-ice official for the NHL and the Washington Capitals organization for nearly 8 seasons between 1998-1999 and 2005-2006. Their dad resigned his off-ice officiating position to involve himself more with family and business interests. Through their obvious exposure to the Washington Capitals, the boys have identified early on with Alexander Ovechkin (Mac) and Nicklas Backstrom (Aidan).
A ton of credit for their love of ice hockey goes to their mom. She took the initiative in mid to late 2007 to take them up to the Ashburn Ice House, located in Ashburn, VA, on a regular basis to allow them to get their legs in Power Ice, Learn to Play, and Mini Mites programs and be around the game for themselves. As you'll see, that introduction to the game for themselves, not simply as spectators or fans, has launched them on their way.
I hope you'll enjoy reading this account as it is frequently updated.
